Usually, I avoid Quora, a popular social media venue, because the conversations there have become ridiculous. This morning, however, I saw a question that was poorly conceived but still appealed to me. I kind of like my answer.
איך אפשר להוכיח שאלוהים קיים? ואם קיים איך יודעים שהאלוהים שלנו (היהודים) הוא האמיתי? בנוסף האם התורה בכלל אמיתיתכשהיינו עבדים במצרים, הרבה בני ישראל שאלו שאלה זו. ובכל זאת הם התפללו לאלוהיהם, לא לאל מצרי, למען ישועתם. כשיצאנו ממצרים, רבים מבני ישראל עדיין לא האמינו למשה ואהרן, והם נשארו במצרים. הם החמיצו את טיול המחנאות הגדול בן ארבעים השנים, ומעולם לא למדו אם זה נכון או לא מאות אלפי בני ישראל יצאו ממצרים עם משה, ובכל זאת הם שאלו את אותה שאלה מדי יום, “האם זה האל האמיתי?” במשך ארבעים שנה הם הטילו ספק במה שקורה, גם כשראו ושמעו וחוו את כל מה שקרה אנחנו עם נוקשה עורף, ויש דברים שלעולם לא נוכל להוכיח לעצמנו, גם כשאנחנו רואים את ההוכחה ממש מולנו. במשך יותר משלושת אלפים שנה, שאלנו את אותה שאלה והתשובה מעולם לא השתנתה. זו התשובה (וזכרו, שיהודים תמיד עונים על שאלה בשאלה אחרת). למה אתה צריך הוכחה לקיומו של האל שלנו? האם אתה צריך הוכחה לקיום שלך? האם אתה הולך להחמיץ את טיול הקמפינג הגדול ביותר אי פעם רק בגלל שאין לך הוכחות הדרך היחידה להכיר באמת את אלוהי ישראל היא ללמוד את תורתו. הדרך היחידה לדעת אם תורה נכונה או לא היא ללמוד תורה, להתעסק בתורה. וגם אז מה שנכון לך אולי לא נכון לחבריך שלא רוצים להצטרף לטיול הקמפינג עד כאן, החדשות |
How can you prove that God exists? And if he does exist, how do we know that our God (the Jews) is the real one? In addition, is the Torah even real?
When we were slaves in Egypt, many Israelites asked this question. And yet they prayed to their god, not to an Egyptian god, for their salvation. When we left Egypt, many of the Israelites still did not believe Moses and Aaron, and they remained in Egypt. They missed the great camping trip of forty years, and never learned whether it was true or not.
Hundreds of thousands of Israelites came out of Egypt with Moses, yet they asked the same question every day, “Is this the true god?” For forty years they doubted what was happening, even when they saw and heard and experienced everything that happened.
We are a stiff-necked people, and there are things we can never prove to ourselves, even when we see the proof right in front of us. For more than three thousand years, we have asked the same question and the answer has never changed. This is the answer (and remember, Jews always answer a question with another question).
Why do you need proof of the existence of our god? Do you need proof of your existence? Are you going to miss out on the greatest camping trip of all time just because you have no proof?
The only way to truly know the god of Israel is to study His Torah. The only way to know if Torah is true or not is to study Torah, to be occupied with Torah. And even then, what is true for you may not be true for your friends who don’t want to join the camping trip.
